20-HIT ATTACK LEADS HIGHLANDERS’ SWEEP AT PRESBYTERIAN
CLINTON, S.C. – Radford hit five home runs and recorded 20 hits as it swept a doubleheader from first-place Presbyterian, Saturday afternoon from PC Softball Complex. The Highlanders (24-13, 5-2 Big South) edged the Blue Hose (20-10-1, 5-5), 3-1 in game one and cruised to a 11-3 five-inning victory in game two.
Jackie Jenkins (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) tossed 5.2 innings of shutout relief and Kristen Shifflett (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) hit a two-run home run as Radford took the opener, 3-1.
The Highlanders’ bats came alive in the game two as they registered a season-high 14 hits and raced out to a 10-2 lead after three innings to earn the twinbill sweep.
Taylor Cunningham (Fairfax, Va./Robinson Secondary) went 4-for-6 in the doubleheader. Cunningham recorded a double, home run, two RBI and two runs.
In game one, Jenkins scattered four hits, struck out one and did not walk a batter as she improved to 10-1. Shifflett’s second long ball of the season, erased a 1-0 deficit in the third and gave the Highlanders a lead they would not relinquish.
PC struck early as Morgan Duram’s one-out double to center plated Lindsey Trombley from first. Duram was caught trying to go to third and the damage stayed at one run.
A one-out single in the second chased starter Stephanie Dameron (Dameron, Md./St. Mary’s Ryken). Jenkins entered and after a bunt single got out of the first and second jam. She would allow three soft singles the rest of the way.
Radford added a two-out insurance run in the fifth, courtesy of a RBI single by Cunningham.
Lesley Hensley (13-5) went the distance for the Blue Hose, surrendering six hits, walking two and striking out two. Durham, Tera Powell and Amanda Miller had two hits apiece,
Led by 3-for-3 performances from Cunningham and Shannon Keefe (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) and five RBI from Nichole Beall (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County), Radford took game two in five innings.
The first 12 runs of the contest came with two outs.
Dameron (10-3) rebounded from her game one start to scatter seven hits and allow one earned run with three strikeouts.
Cunningham doubled off the fence in left and scored on a Shannon Keefe (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) bloop single to right. Michelle Beall (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper) cleared the bases with a two-run shot to center.
PC took advantage of an error to get two back in the bottom half on a Codee Yeske two-run bloop double.
Radford added four more in the second. Nichole Beall laced a three-run long ball to center and two pitches later, Cunningham blasted a solo shot to left centerfield for a 7-2 lead.
Three more in the third pushed Radford’s advantage to 10-2 with two coming on single just inside the line by Nichole Beall. Those two gave her five RBI, matching her previous career-high that she recorded on March 20 vs. Delaware.
Three soft singles led to a PC run in the third. Meredith Moore (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) closed out the scoring with her third long ball of season, a leadoff blast to left in the fifth.
Moore, Beall and Lauren Williams (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) all recorded two hits. Williams scored a pair of runs.
The teams wrap up the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
